Population

  • Between 1990 and 2000, Gresham saw its population increase by 32.3%.
  • Between 2000 and 2005, the population increased by 5.69%.
  • Between 2005 and 2006, the population increased by 1.86%
  • Between 2006 and 2007, the population increase by 2.21%.
  • Until the 2007 numbers came out, the greatest increase in population since 2000 was 05-06. But during 06-07, we increased our population at an even higher rate.
  • Between 2000 and 2004, the amount of increase in our city's population began to decrease. That changed in 04-05, and the amount of increase has been going up each year. The percent increase between 05-06 was three times that just two years earlier.
  • Some estimates say that if the city's population continues to increase at this rate, it could double its 2000 population by 2035.
  • Population increases in the coming years will be even higher than current rates, as residents begin moving into annexed areas of the city.
  • The city should hit 100,000 residents near the beginning of 2008.

Race & Ethnicity

  • Between 2000 and 2005, the city has seen almost a 60% in African American residents, almost 75% increase in American Indians/Alaska Natives, and a 60% increase in Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders.
  • The African American population more than doubled its percentage of the entire community-- from 1.9% to 4.1%.
  • The American Indians/Alaska Natives population saw its percentage of the entire community nearly quadruple -- from 0.9% to 3.4%.
  • The white population rose by less than 5% during the same time.
  • The Hispanic and Latino population increased by almost 30%.
  • In total, the non-white population of the city has increased by nearly 20%, which gives us a more diverse population.
  • The population of people speaking a language other than English at home increased almost 30%.

Economy

  • While the population increased by 5.38%, the percent of people in the workforce increased by 7.02%. This means a larger portion of the population is working than it was in 2000.
  • During the same time, the median household income has decreased by 5.66%, and the median family income by 5.74%.
  • Per capita income increased by 4.32% to $20,473.
  • Almost 68% of parents with kids under the age of 6, and those ages 6-17 have parents who both work.

Housing

  • The median price of a home has increased by 19.59%.
  • The percent of housing units owner-occupied increased by 5.5%.
  • The percent of housing units renter-occupied increased by 15.42%.
  • The number of vacant housing units increased by almost 400.
  • Vacancy of houses is 1.3% and 5.1% in rental units.
  • 48% of housing units are single detached.
  • 12.5% of units are in buildings with 10-19 units.
  • 13% of units are in buildings with 20 or more units.
  • Increases in the number of units available were in those with 2 units attached to each other (such as row houses) and those with 10-19 units (which is a size growing in popularity for apartment complexes). All other types of housing saw their percentage of the total number of units decrease.
  • These numbers show that there is an increase in the number of medium sized apartment buildings and row house/duplex style 2-unit housing.
  • 11% of the housing available was built since 2000. Another 21% was built in the 1990s.
  • Average household size is the practically the same for renter-occupied units as it is owner-occupied units: 2.57 and 2.56, respectively.
  • 62.43% of households moved into their place of residence in 2000 or later. Another 17% moved in between 1995 and 2000.
  • 11% of households have no vehicle available. 36% have only one vehicle.
  • The number of households without a phone have more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2005.
  • More than 70% of residents in rental units pay between $500-999 per month in rent. For 40%, their rent is more than 35% of their monthly household income.
